For Families- Resources

What is ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a science that helps us understand how behavior works and how learning happens. In simple terms, it’s about figuring out why a behavior is happening and teaching new skills in a positive, supportive way.

ABA focuses on:

  • Building skills – such as communication, social interaction, self-help, and daily routines.

  • Reducing barriers – gently decreasing behaviors that get in the way of learning or independence.

  • Encouraging progress – celebrating small steps and making learning fun and meaningful.

At Hoʻoulu Pū ABA, we use ABA to support keiki in Hawaiʻi by blending evidence-based strategies with aloha and cultural values. Our goal is to help children gain confidence, learn new skills, and strengthen connections with their ʻohana, school, and community.
